Only the jets exceed 500 mph at Reno.. RARA tried to adjust the turn radius about 100ft from the pilot to get the props to exceed 500 in timing but it was a failure as FAI would not recognize the speed if the course wasn’t measured from pylon to pylon instead of the “guessed” airplane turn point. RARA changed it back how they measured the course dooming any prop plane from exceeding 500. The new course in Roswell NM might allow the props to exceed 500. The jets will be 25-50 mph faster as always. Not to take anything away from Jay and Steve-o as they really did a great job with Strega.

Those props on these high revving racing Merlins sound a lot like the recordings of the Napier Sabre of the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest, especially when approaching the microphone (though the exhaust note is very different).

A week after the final Reno Air Races it occurs to me that this video is the last fastest few laps to have been run at Stead. Since this qual run all speeds were significantly slower.

I haven't seen the Purple #64 since it was based at Van Nuys, California in the 80s

The max airspeed of WW2 era P51D at 35,000' was in rated at app. 420mph; at altitude of 1000' (+-) it was rated at 370mph(+-) . I am not sure if was at emergency power setting or maximum continuous power setting. The speed of modified race planes is achieved by reducing drag : shorter wings, canopy and airframe mods to reduce drag , engine mods and only focus on lower level performance. I still enjoy watching these low level speed vids

I thought this had been cancelled long ago due to the danger the public faces. This is crazy irresponsible air show thinking. These planes are very old and pushed to the limit by old pilots who never made the military grade. Won’t be long before the next crowd fatality. This was pure luck that a crash and deaths didn’t occur.
